SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Senior captains Sean Fagan (Arlington, Mass.) andMichael Frey (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) each scored key victories to help lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a pair of dual meet victories at the Western New England University Triangular Sunday afternoon at the Alumni Healthful Living Center Fieldhouse.
The Huskies defeated host Western New England University Golden Bears 28-24 and then rumbled their way to a 24-18 victory over the Bridgewater State University Bears. With the pair of wins, Southern Maine improves its dual meet record to 9-3.
The Huskies opened the day against WNEU and fell behind 18-0 after the first three matches. Sophomore Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) posted the Huskies' first points scoring a 6-3 decision over Sean McAllister at 149 pounds starting a four-bout sweep capped by a major decision win by classmate Aaron Weiss (East Machias, Maine/St. Paul's School). Grappling at 174-pounds, Weiss defeated WNEU's Bryan Burnette 11-2 to score four points and pull USM even with the Golden Bears at 18-18. A forfeit at 184 pounds returned the lead to WNEU, 24-18, before Fagan scored a key 13-4 major decision win at 197 pounds defeating Brian Donovan. With Fagan's win, USM trailed 24-22, and needed a win at 285 to claim the match. Frey delivered for the Huskies, leading Carl Newman 12-2 before Newman conceded the match due to injury for the 28-24 Huskies' win.
In a nip-and-tuck match with Bridgewater State, Southern Maine trailed the Bears 15-13 after a pin at 174 pounds from BSU's Ryan Cassidy. The Huskies reclaimed the lead as Weiss delivered with a pin of his own at 184 pounds, downing Bobby Gasdia in 3:35 for a 19-15 lead. With the match in the balance, Fagan posted his second win of the day in dominating fashion earning a technical fall with a resounding 15-0 win over Casey Enderlin at 197-pounds. Fagan's win, his 12th of the season, put the match out of reach for BSU. Fagan is now 12-1 this year.
