Noble wrestling on rise again

HIGH SCHOOL EXTRA

Noble High School’s wrestling team is once again on the rise in North Berwick.

Class A champions 11 times from 1999-2011, Noble has had a couple of down seasons – by its own standard – as Marshwood has won the past three Class A titles.

The neighboring Hawks from South Berwick are still the favorites but a youthful Noble team showed it has made up ground in two tough tournaments last week.

At its own two-day Noble Invitational the Knights were just four points off Marshwood’s winning total. Similarly, at the Spartan Wrestling Annual Tourney in Sanford, Marshwood was second with Noble in third, nine points back.

“I just think we’re working harder in practice,” said Jake Martel, who finished second at Noble and third at Sanford in the 126-pound class. “Everybody’s contributing more and a lot of us younger kids are doing really well.”

At Sanford, six Knights placed in the top three. Marshwood had five top-three finishers.

“I think we have a good chance of catching them,” Shorey said. “We can definitely hang with them more than we did last year.”
