NWCA Div. I rankings shaken up after big dual meets

BY JASON BRYANT NWCA

Manheim, Pennsylvania -- Iowa remained No. 1 in the most recent USA Today/NWCA Division I Coaches Poll released on Tuesday, but the Hawkeyes are the unanimous No. 1 for the first time this season.

The Hawkeyes blasted Oklahoma State (3-2) 30-7 over the weekend to stay unbeaten in dual competition at 8-0. Minnesota (8-0) got a scare in a 20-19 victory at home over Michigan, but the Gophers held their position at No. 2. The Hawkeyes and Gophers will meet on January 30 in Minneapolis.

Missouri improved to 13-0 after beating then No. 4 Cornell 27-9 in Ithaca. Cornell (6-1) fell to No. 7, while Ohio State (5-3) leapfrogged Virginia Tech (8-1) and Penn State (6-1) to move to No. 4 in this week's poll. Ohio State topped Penn State 22-15 on Sunday in Columbus. Virginia Tech won four matches to win its second Virginia Duals National College Division championship. The Hokies beat ranked opponents Old Dominion and Virginia to claim the championship.

Cornell, Oklahoma State, Pittsburgh and Lehigh round out the top 10.

Edinboro (8-4) dropped back-to-back matches against Virginia and Old Dominion at the Virginia Duals to slide five spots down to No. 15. The Fighting Scots were without two-time All-American A.J. Schopp.

After starting the year slow, West Virginia (6-5) moved into the Top 25 for the first time under first-year head coach Sammie Henson. The Mountaineers finished fifth at the Virginia Duals, beating then No. 25 Bucknell along the way. They also beat Arizona State for the second time in three tries this season. Despite taking losses to unranked teams, Bucknell and Rider stayed in the Top 25. Rider (7-4), wrestling without two starters in Virginia, slid eight spots to No. 25.

Duke upset then-No. 22 N.C. State 18-17. The loss dropped the Wolfpack out of the Top 25.

The Big Ten has four of the top five teams in the country and holds 10 of the 25 places in the poll. The ACC, Big 12 and EIWA have three each.
