Southern Maine Captures North Atlantic Wrestling Championship

DURHAM, N.H. – Six members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team claimed individual titles in their respective weight classes as the Huskies claimed the 2014 team championship at the North Atlantic Wrestling Championship hosted by the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H.
            Southern Maine scored 135 points to lead the seven-team field.  Norwich University finished second with 118 points, followed by Plymouth State in third with 91 points.  Host UNH placed fourth with 45.5 points.
            It is the first time in program history that Huskies' wrestling has placed first at the team championship tournament. Freshmen Khalil Newbill (Wilton, Maine/Mt. Blue),Carl Luth (Milford, Conn./Foran), Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine), Caleb Hall(Dixfield, Maine/Dirigo), junior Sean Fagan (Arlington, Mass.) and senior Dan Suarez(New Milford, N.J.) each claimed individual titles.
            Fresh off of his NEWA Rookie of the Week honors, Del Gallo won the 149-pound bracket posting a perfect 4-0 mark to claim the title.  Del Gallo earned two wins by fall and one by major decision to highlight his championship.
            Fagan, a junior co-captain, rumbled his way to a 197-pound championship with two wins by fall, including a pin over Jeff Reynolds of Plymouth State in 3:44 to set up his championship run.  Claiming the 235-pound division, Suarez, a senior co-captain, earned a major decision 10-4 win over Victor Irwin of EMCC and a technical fall 26-11 win over Mike Brannen of the University of New Hampshire.
            Newbill claimed the 125-pound bracket, while Luth earned the championship at 141 pounds.  Hall posted four wins, including two pins to grab the top spot at the 157-pound bracket.
            Southern Maine returns to action on March 1 at the NCAA New England Regional Championship hosted by Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn.
