GORHAM, Maine – Junior Jonathan Deupree (Ozona, Fla./Countryside) gutted out a 8-6 win over in a battle between two regionally-ranked grapplers as the University of Southern Maine Huskies downed the Plymouth State University Panthers 37-12 in the first of two dual meets on Senior Day at Hill Gym. The Huskies' fell 27-12 to the WPI Engineers in the final match of the day.
With the split the Huskies are 13-5 in dual meets. Plymouth State stands at 5-8, suffering a pair of set back with a 40-15 loss to the Engineers. The two wins improves WPI's record to 10-8.
Ranked fifth nationally and third in New England, Deupree trailed Plymouth State's Chris Perrault 6-4 heading to the third period. Deupree started in the down position and used an escape and a takedown to pull ahead of Perrault 7-6. Deupree earned an additional point with riding time for the 8-6 final. The Huskies' junior captain finished the day with a 2-0 record scoring six of the Huskies' 12 points in the loss to WPI, pinning his opponent Lucas Muntz in 5:30. Deupree is now 23-1 on the season with a perfect 17-0 mark in dual meets. He has seven wins by fall.
Huskies' senior Dan Suarez also had a strong day of competition posting a 2-0 record on senior day. Southern Maine recognized its three seniors Suarez, Rick Chipman (Harpswell, Maine/Mt. Ararat) and Kyle Gallant (Mexico, Maine/Mountain Valley) for their seasons of hard-work and dedication. Suarez earned a pair of wins by fall, scoring six points by putting Plymouth State's Karl Klempa to the mat in just 44 seconds. Against WPI, Suarez overpowered Peter Salem in 1:02. Suarez is now 12-4 on the season with four wins by fall.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) at Rhode Island College for a tri-meet with Roger Williams.
