GORHAM, Maine – Freshman Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team has been named the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Rookie Wrestler of the Week. Del Gallo is the second Huskies' freshmen to earn NEWA Rookie of the Week honors, joining classmate Khalil Newbill(Wilton, Maine/Mt. Blue) who earned the accolade earlier in the season.
Del Gallo posted a 2-0 record in a pair of tough dual meet bouts as the Huskies faced off against No. 15 Roger Williams University and No. 27 Rhode Island College over the weekend. Wrestling at 149-pounds, Del Gallo defeated Roger Williams' James Carroll by decision 3-0 in his first match of the day to account for three of the Huskies six points in the match. Against Rhode Island College, Del Gallo came away with a hard-won 9-7 overtime decision over fifth-ranked Joe Slane.
Del Gallo is presently ranked fourth in the NEWA Individual standing at 149-pounds. He is 15-6 overall and 12-4 in dual meet action, winning eight out of his previous 10 bouts.
Southern Maine returns to action Saturday at the North Atlantic Wrestling Championship hosted by the University of New Hampshire.
