Five Hancock County wresters win individual state titles

ELLSWORTH — Five Hancock County wrestlers took top honors in their weight classes at state wrestling championships in Bath and Rumford on Saturday.
At Morse High School in Bath, the Ellsworth Eagles did not get the state Class B title they were hoping for. But three Eagles, tops among the 18 competing teams, came home with individual championship medals.
The Camden Hills Windjammers became state champions for the third consecutive year, finishing with 124 points.

Mountain Valley was second with 113 and the Eagles placed third with 100.

For Ellsworth at 132 pounds, Dagan Berenyi scored a 12-4 major decision over Brandon Gill of Mountain Valley.

Joe Wright of the Eagles came away with an 8-2 decision over Cyril Miller of Medomak Valley for the 170-pound title.

At 220 pounds, Ellsworth’s Mike Garland bested Alex Urquhart of Hermon in a 5-0 decision for the championship.

Ellsworth’s Connor Petros finished as runner-up at 152 pounds, falling to Connor Winchenbach of Camden Hills by a 10-2 major decision.
Also for the Eagles:

Robert Banner placed third, scoring a 9-5 decision over James Blanchette of Mount View in the consolation final at 126 pounds.

In the Class C championships in Rumford, Dirigo took top team honors with 195.5 points, followed by Dexter with 158 and Lisbon with 134.5.

The small Bucksport Golden Bucks team captured a pair of individual titles.
At 182 pounds, Nic Bishop pinned Jason Baldinelli of Dirigo in just 25 seconds.
At 195 pounds, KP Hilaire was even faster, pinning Lucas MacDonald of Dirigo in only 19 seconds.

In the consolation finals:

Matthew Stewart of the Bucks placed third at 138 pounds, pinning Noah Larabee of Mattanawcook Academy in 3:45.

Josh Hall of Bucksport placed third at 170 pounds, pinning Nicholas Birtz of Mattanawcook Academy in 4:34.

Henry Bowden of the George Stevens Academy Eagles earned a fourth place finish at 132 pounds after being pinned by Richard Moreno of Madison in 4:13.
