GORHAM, Maine – Led by four first place finishes the University of Southern Maine Huskies scored 119 points to lead a field of nine teams and claim 2014 Ted Reese Invitational Championship Sunday afternoon at Hill Gymnasium.
Sophomore Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine), named the tournament's Most Outstanding, was joined by sophomore Kevin Moore (Owls Head, Maine/Mt. Blue), and seniors Sean Fagan (Arlington, Mass.) and Jonathan Deupree (Ozona, Fla./Countryside) as the Huskies' four first place finishers. Overall 10 Southern Maine grapplers finished in the top four of their respective weight classes.
The tournament is named in honor of Ted Reese, the founder of the University of Southern Maine wrestling program – the only NCAA wrestling program in the State of Maine. Reese coached the Huskies' for six seasons prior to handing it off to current USM head coach Joe Pistone. A pioneer of the sport in the State of Maine, Reese has helped develop wrestling programs at Camden-Rockport, Georges Valley and Bonny Eagle.
Wrestling at 149 pounds, Del Gallo was dominant in four matches to rumble his way to a first place finish. Del Gallo opened with a win by technical fall over John Clark of Maine 20-2, before posting back-to-back wins by fall over Trinity's Cameron Driscoll and RPI's Matthew Mawby. Del Gallo downed Driscoll in 2:35 and then quickly put Mawby to the mat 37 seconds. In the championship game, Del Gallo earned a 5-4 decision over Springfield Tech's Abbas Tamardze.
Moore won the 141-pound bracket winning both of matches. Moore opened with a win by fall over MIT's Trevor Romero in 6:59. In the championship, Moore fought his way to a 4-3 decision over teammate Colin Sevigny (Wells, Maine).
Co-captains Fagan and Deupree won the 197-pound and 184-pound divisions. Fagan opened his day earning back-to-back pins. Fagan pinned PSU's Nick Pacheco in 3:19 and then pinned Lawrence Chan of MIT in 4:28 to advance to the championship. Fagan then worked his way to an 8-6 win over Plymouth State's Cody Carrillo. With his three wins, Fagan has improved his undefeated record to 10-0.
Deupree also had a dominant effort pinning PSU's Matt Moher in 1:31 to open the tournament, before taking a 16-2 major decision over River Robertson of UMaine. In the championship, Deupree won by decision 6-1 over PSU's Christopher Perreault.
Junior Michael Arangio (Wakefield, Mass.), Sevigney and sophomore Carl Luth (Milford, Conn.) each earned second place finishes for USM at 125, 141 and 157 pounds respectively. Freshman Daniel DeCarlo (Port Jervis, N.Y.) placed third at 165 pounds winning three of four matches, including a pin over Springfield Tech's Ibragim Ibragimov in 4:48 to secure third place. Freshman Zachary Stevens (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon) and sophomore Aaron Weiss (East Machias, Maine/St. Paul's School) each placed fourth in 149 and 174 pounds respectively.
Southern Maine remains in Gorham for its next contest, hosting Plymouth State and Rhode Island College for a pair of dual meets on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
