Preseason tournament remembers late Bucksport wrestler

BUCKSPORT
Every year before the winter sports season begins, high school wrestling teams meet at Bucksport High School to compete in honor of the late Bucksport wrestler Ryan Detour.
Detour died from a long-term health issue on Dec. 7, 2002, at the age of 17 on a wrestling mat at a match in Caribou. He was buried in his wrestling gear.

Since then, a preseason meet has been held every winter called the Ryan Detour Memorial Wrestling Tournament.
On Saturday, Nov. 29, Bucksport coach Corey Darveau kicked off the event by presenting Detour’s mother with a bouquet of flowers.
“We thank Ryan’s parents for allowing us to honor their son in the fantastic sport of wrestling,” Darveau said.
Eighty-four wrestlers from 13 different schools competed this year. Larry Clement and Peter Stewart, the organizers of the event, changed the format of the tournament from the standard bracket to a round-robin format.
“Their decision resulted in all kids who entered the tournament getting at least three matches,” said the referee who ran the event, Steve Patten. “I think the event honored Ryan’s memory and his spirit.”
Results from the tournament were provided by Patten.
