So.Maine: Deupree & Del Gallo Punch Tickets to NCAA Division III National Championship (March 13-14)


Huskies' Jonathan Deupree defended his 184-pound regional championship and becomes the third USM wrestler to earn multiple berths to the NCAA Championship. Deupree and sophomore Daniel Del Gallo will head to Hershey, Pa. for the national championship March 13-14.

BRISTOL, R.I. – Senior Jonathan Deupree (Ozona, Fla./Countryside) defended his title as the 184-pound NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Champion and sophomoreDaniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) finished second in the 149-pound bracket to earn berths into the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament later this month.

Deupree and Del Gallo were two of four Huskies' wrestlers to earn All-Region honors. Sophomore Carl Luth (Milford, Conn./Foran) and senior Sean Fagan(Arlington, Mass.) each placed fifth overall at 157 and 197 pounds respectively. Led by its four All-Region grapplers, Southern Maine placed eighth overall out of 18 teams competing at the regional championship hosted by Roger Williams University. The Huskies' totaled 59 points.

Ranked sixth nationally at 184-pounds and second in New England, Deupree entered the regional championship at the third seed. In his first day of competition, Deupree posted a pair of wins to position himself in the championship semifinal. Deupree defeated Western New England's Andrew Cole 6-0 in his first match and then worked his way to a 3-2 decision over six-seed Joe Albina of Roger Williams in the championship quarterfinals. 

In the championship semifinal, Deupree earned a convincing 9-2 win over seventh seed Michael Labell of Johnson & Wales to set up a championship showdown with SUNY-Cortland's Tyler Beckwith. Beckwith earned his spot in the finals earning two wins by fall and then upsetting top-seeded Christopher Chorzepa of Williams College 6-5 in the semifinals. In an exciting final bout, Deupree came out the victor earning a 9-4 sudden victory win over Beckwith to defend his title. Deupree is now 27-3 on the season.

Seeded fourth in the 149-pound bracket, Del Gallo posted a pair of wins to advance to the championship semifinals, opening with a strong 13-6 major decision win over Springfield College's Zach Joseph. In the championship quarterfinals, Del Gallo went head-to-head with fifth-seeded Shawn Giblin of Rhode Island College and game away with a win by fall, putting Giblin to the mat in 4:50. Del Gallo, who narrowly missed all-region honors as a rookie, assured his place on the podium with a thrilling upset win over top-ranked Joey Gaccione of Johnson & Wales in the championship semifinals. Del Gallo earned his second consecutive win by fall of the tournament putting Gaccione to the mat in 4:36 securing his admission into the NCAA National Championship. In the bracket's championship bout, Del Gallo lost in overtime despite a valiant effort to second-seeded Eamonn Gaffney of Ithaca College 5-3. 

After posting a 2-1 mark in the first day of competition, Luth battled his way back to earn a spot on the podium for the Huskies at 157 pounds. Facing elimination, Luth bounced back to stay alive with a 14-2 major decision over Norwich's Alex Kwmuntis to earn a spot in the consolation quarterfinals. In his first match of the second day, Luth again wrestled strong earning a 17-7 major decision victory over Johnson & Wales Andrew Stock to move into the consolation semifinals. In the semifinal round, Luth fell to Springfield's Erick Hamrick in 3:08. Still in the hunt for all-region honors, Luth defeated familiar foe Michael Murphy of Rhode Island College in the fifth place match earning a win by fall in 6:18. 

Wrestling at 197, Fagan went 2-1 in the first day of competition, earning a 5-3 win over Western New England's Brian Donovan to earn a spot in the consolation quarterfinals. Facing possible elimination, Fagan battled back and earned a hard-won 2-1 decision over seventh-seed Andrew Brooks of Williams College to move into the consolation semifinals. In the semifinals, Fagan dropped a 14-3 major decision to Wesleyan's Isaiah Bellamy. Sent to the fifth place match, Fagan came through with a 11-10 decision over SUNY-Oneonta's Chad Obzud to secure All-Region honors.

Del Gallo's entry into the NCAA Division III National Championship tournament makes him just the seventh Husky wrestler to move onto the sport's pinnacle event. Del Gallo joins Husky greats

Deupree, who became just the sixth Husky wrestler to advance to the National Championship Adam Farrington (1999 and 2001), Steve Valastro (2007), Mike Morin (2008, 2009, 2010), Matt Ulrich (2010) and Billy Cole (2011) and Deupree (2014, 2015). Deupree's repeat entry in the tourney makes him just the third USM grappler to participate in the national championship more than once in his career, joining Farrington and USM's first wrestling All-American and current assistant Coach Michael Morin. 

Deupree and Del Gallo will compete at the 2015 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament on March 13-14 at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pa.
