Ellsworth High wrestlers capture East Class B crown; Skowhegan takes Class A

Ellsworth placed six wrestlers in the championship round and four captured titles to propel the Eagles to the Eastern Maine Class B crown Saturday at Medomak Valley High School in Waldoboro.

Skowhegan won the East Class A title at Oxford Hills High School in South Paris.

In the Class B meet, Peyton Cole, Dagan Berenyi, Connor Petros and Trent Goodman each collected an individual title for the Eagles.

Cole earned a 13-8 decision over Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield’s Dylan Dahlbergh in the 132-pound division and Berenyi pinned Medomak’s Riley McCollett in 2:50 in the 145 class.

Petros notched a 7-5 decision over Foxcroft Academy’s Brooks Law in 152 and Goodman pinned Mount Desert Island’s Wilder Young in 1:35 in the 160 division.

The Eagles rolled up 166 points to edge Foxcroft (155). Belfast finished third at 150 and was followed by Camden Hills (130), Medomak (68), Caribou (44), MDI (40), MCI (33), Oceanside of Rockland/Thomaston (24) and John Bapst of Bangor (4).

Robert Banner earned a second-place finish for the Eagles in the 126 division while Jeff Weeks placed second in 182. Noah Robidoux (120), Jack Weeks (138) and Tyler Hardwick (170) recorded third-place finishes while Jared Brown finished fourth in 195.

Also notching individual titles were: Belfast’s Brenden Bruns (106) and Jared Hansen (285); Camden Hills’ Zach Annis (113), John Underhill (138) and Kalo Littlejohn (195); and Foxcroft’s Antonio Ayala (120), Eli Olson (126), Billy Brock (170), Brandon Brock (182) and Michael Pendriss (220).

In the Class A meet, Cody Craig, Samson Sirois, Tyler Craig, Cooper Holland, and Kameron Doucette all sparked Skowhegan by capturing individual crowns.

Craig beat Jacob Booth of Nokomis via technical fall (16-0) in the 106-pound class while Sirois followed that up by pinning Mt.Blue’s Matthew Hyde in 51 seconds in the 113 division.

Craig also earned his title via pin, stopping Windham’s Jesse Maller at 3:29. Holland earned a 6-3 decision over Westbrook’s Max Storm and Doucette notched a 3-0 decision over Westbrook’s Brandon Conley.

Skowhegan compiled 184.5 points to pull away from second-place Oxford Hills (128). Cony of Augusta finished third with 123.5 and was followed by Westbrook (110), Nokomis of Newport (108.5), Mt. Ararat of Topsham (65), Windham (51), Mt. Blue of Farmington (32), Brunswick (23.5), Hampden Academy (20), Gorham (20), Messalonskee of Oakland (16), and Brewer (6).

Jon Bell (120), Julian Sirois (138), and Logan Stevens (160) earned second-place finishes for the Indians while Luke Bolster (145) notched a third place. Also picking up points with fourth-place efforts were Oakley Fortin (220) and Caleb Vautier (285).

Other wrestlers earning Class A East titles were: Brunswick’s Christian Jensen (120), Cony’s Zeko Caudill (138) and Max Storey (220), Oxford Hills’ Dawson Stevens (145) and Malik Geiger (182), Mt. Ararat’s Robert Heatherman (160), Gorham’s Abraham Eaton (170) and Nokomis’ Christopher Wilson (195) and Jacob Nichols (285).

The top four finishers in each weight class earn berths to next Saturday’s state finals with meets scheduled at Mt. Ararat (Class A), Fryeburg Academy (Class B) and Bucksport (Class C).
