Huskies' captain Jonathan Deupree
WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Jonathan Deupree (Ozona, Fla./Countryside) earned a pair of wins by decision to advance to the championship quarterfinals of the 184-pound bracket at the 2014 NCAA Northeast Regional to highlight several strong performances by the University of Southern Maine Huskies' Wrestling team.
Along with Deupree, freshmen Khalil Newbill (Wilton, Maine) and Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) are still alive for the Huskies following the first day of competition. Competing at Newbill earned a pin over Coast Guard's Earl Roberts in 4:55 in his first match. After a 13-5 loss in his second match of the day, Newbill downed Bridgewater State's Brett Reed 11-3 to remain in contention for All-Northeast Region Honors. Wrestling at 149 pounds, Del Gallo earned a 6-4 victory over Danny Downes of Roger Williams to open the tournament and then bounced back from a 14-7 defeat to earn a major decision win over Rhode Island College Christopher Kelly 18-4. Both Newbill and Del Gallo can place as high as third in Sunday's bracket.
Deupree's pair of wins set him up for the championship quarterfinals of the 184-pound bracket. Deupree defeated Springfield's Michael Case 7-2 in his opener and then rumbled to a 3-2 decision over Scott Bova of SUNY-Oswego. Deupree will face Dylen Sebolt of Johnson and Wales. Sebolt is the third seed in the bracket, while Deupree is seeded second.
The Huskies return to action on Sunday (10:00 a.m.).
