MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Junior Jonathan Deupree (Ozona, Fla./Countryside) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies' wrestling team earned an overtime win by fall against David Welch of Roger Williams University to claim the 184-pound championship at the 2014 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championship Sunday afternoon at Wesleyan University's Bacon Field House. For his efforts and outstanding performance, Deupree was also recognized as the co-Most Outstanding Wrestler of the 2014 NCAA Division III Northeast Regional, becoming the first Husky grappler to earn such an honor.
With his regional title in hand, Deupree earns a spot in the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament on Friday and Saturday, March 14-15 held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Deupree is the sixth Huskies' wrestler to advance to the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament joining Adam Farrington (1999 and 2001), Steve Valastro (2007), Mike Morin (2008, 2009, 2010), Matt Ulrich (2010) and Billy Cole (2011).  Both Morin and Ulrich earned All-American honors during their trips to the NCAA Division III National Championship with Morin earning it in 2009 and 2010.
Seeded-second in the 184-pound bracket, Deupree earned a pair of decisions in his first two matches on Saturday.  Deupree opened the tourney with a 7-2 victory over Springfield's Michael Case and then took down seventh-seeded Scott Bova of SUNY-Oswego 3-2.  Case went on to finish fourth in the bracket.
On Sunday, Deupree continued to wrestle strongly earning an 8-5 decision over third-seeded Dylen Seybolt of Johnson & Wales University in the championship semifinals. Deupree's win over Seybolt set up a showdown of the number one two seeds in the tournament and a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers as Roger Williams' David Welch cleared his side of the bracket.  Both Deupree and Welch are ranked in the top 10 of the National Wrestling Coaches' Association (NWCA) Division III Individual Rankings poll, with Welch ranked third nationally and Deupree ranked fifth.
In a tough battle, Deupree was able to come out the victor pinning Welch in overtime at 7:37 to earn the regional championship.  With the four victories during the tournament, Deupree improves his record to 29-2.
Overall as a team, Southern Maine placed 13th out of 18 teams scoring 30.5 points. Huskies' freshman Daniel Del Gallo (Gardiner, Maine) and Khalil Newbill (Wilton, Maine/Mt. Blue) each performed admirably in their first regional championship experience narrowly missing out on All-Region honors.  Newbill was 2-2 at the tourney, scoring 4.5 points for USM, while Del Gallo was 2-2, scoring 3.5 points for the Huskies at 125 and 149 pounds respectively.
