GORHAM, Maine – Freshmen Carl Luth (Milford, Conn./Foran), Daniel Del Gallo(Gardiner, Maine) and junior captain Sean Fagan (Arlington, Mass.) each earned a pair of wins as the University of Southern Maine Huskies wrestling team earned a pair of dual meet victories Sunday afternoon in Hill Gymnasium.
Southern Maine defeated Plymouth State 34-19 in the opener and then downed Western New England 34-16. In the final match of the day, Western New England defeated Plymouth State 24-20. Southern Maine is now 10-3 in dual meet action. Western New England stands at 3-6, while Plymouth State falls to 3-4 with the two losses.
Wrestling at 149, Luth defeated PSU's Alex Gerhold by technical fall with a dominating 15-0 win, earning his second win by technical fall of the season. Luth then went on to defeat Western New England's Pat Hamel grappling his way to a win by fall in 1:27. Luth's victory over Hamel marked his team-leading 10th win by fall and upped his overall record to 19-6.
Del Gallo had a strong day competing at 157 earning a pair of pins. Now 9-5 on the season, Del Gallo pinned PSU's Domenic Ferreira in 3:58 in his first match of the day and then put WNEU's Robert Cox to the mat in 1:15. Del Gallo has four pins this season and is 5-2 in dual meets in his rookie campaign.
Continuing his strong season at 197, Fagan dominated PSU's Justin Demers in his opening match with a 16-0 technical fall. Fagan's fourth win by technical fall this season put the match out of reach for Plymouth as his five points in the victory gave USM a 28-19 lead with one bout remaining. Against Western New England, Fagan earned a major decision over Brian Donovan with a 13-4 win. Fagan remains undefeated in dual meet action at 10-0 and improves his overall record to 18-4.
Husky senior captain Dan Suarez (New Milford, N.J.) had a decisive win in his one match of the day, pinning his opponent, Jeff Reynolds of Plymouth State, in just 28 seconds. Suarez is 9-3 this season with three wins by fall.
Southern Maine travels to Bridgewater State next Sunday (10:00 a.m.) for the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Duals.
